I have tried to ask this before with no luck, Im looking for a movie (and it is not dreamscape)?

the movie is something like maybe early 90s or the 80s or so about a young man who has this disease where he enters this dreamworld , it isnt theTV series the Odyssey either, everytime he falls asleep his nightmares kill him , he is usually afraid to go to sleep , and they try everything in hospital and the works and so fourth to try and get this young man cured of his disease when he falls asleep he fights the man of his nightmares a headless horseman type character ( it isnt Freddy Kruger either) in a grave yard in a nighttime setting the boy can only evade his dream invader , he dares not fight him , the beast would win , and one day in the hospital the young man wakes up, and he is haveing a talk with his father and is absolutely sweating the boy is nearing completion of his life its either he takes his fathers hand and passes the disease on to his father , by holding his fathers head in his hands it sort of like magic goes into him , the reason this happens is because the father wants to help his son somehow, and he wants to join the son in his nightmares to fight the beast, who so whom kills in the dreamworld and is the disease, and so it happens the father and the son are together in this nightmare world that kills slowly and they really try to fight the beast, and the father dies in the dream from this headless horseman type character (some type of evil rider) and the boy eventually wakes up and is cured from his disease but little would you realize that the father never wakes up again , and it really puzzles the hospital staff but the father really died and it turns out ok the father was the hero for his son .
